in a case…
How if I hadn’t gone to that Eurythmics gig on Potsdamerstr
and gone backstage
and met Johnny through Dave
who told me about a musicians bar on Kaiser Friedrichstr called
Banana
and how if I hadn’t met Anthony a few weeks earlier
saxophonist walked in art gallery by Ernst Reuter Platz with artists and performers where I just happened to have chanced that day and short conversation ended with invitation to percussionist chair for next day’s performance, me flailing while Sylvie emerged from tin foil and somebody chanted something and Anthony wailed and conducted
and ended up taking his place on Suarezstr just round the corner from Kaiser Friedrich when he took Sabine to DC
I wouldn’t have taken the 19 bus and met Ellys who lived up by Bismarckstr and connected me to most of the gigs I did that year, if I hadn’t lived there, but that’s another synchronistic story that informs how I stayed in Berlin
but Johnny told me about a musicians bar on Kaiser Friedrich
just round from Suarez where I lived
so I went and Johnny introduced me to Lisa
who lived round the corner on Kant
Johnny introduced us so we could work together so we did
but me with my nature of that time
and she with hers
took it further
so when she inevitably wanted to return to NYC I was ready
and even if I had decided to stay in Berlin it would have been empty because I’d invested more than work or more than heart
in her
so it was — I had no other possibility given the outer and the inner of that time

now, later, much later, as the decade progressed
I don’t know why I went back to London and NYC and back again so often
also to Holland
to say nothing of work in Japan or every and anywhere
but not to Berlin
I guess I made money in London easily
and NYC
helped me muscle build
and I knew that
once I set foot in Berlin again
I’d understand that
I had unfinished business there, and that too was inevitable
but not yet?

Much much later even, but earlier today again, I felt that old centre of West Berlin within me, and of course, that city has actually utterly gone, the energy that was that city has left those buildings…
so although the work is there calling, and needs doing, it’s really not what I thought it was back then.

O violin, are you played by The Musician? Or some scoundrel from Bahnhof Zoo who needs a few marks? Either way…
