for Danceworks Berlin.
Musician Geoffrey Armes had his first taste of working with dancers at the Laban Centre in London during the early nineteen-eighties. The UK native quickly established himself as an accompanist and composer before moving on to work in Rotterdam, Koeln and Berlin, where he first composed for Ellys. Now resident in New York City, although returning to Berlin regularly, Armes has established himself as one of the city’s premier accompanists and composers for Modern Dance. Credits include Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, the Juilliard, NYU Tisch, Merce Cunningham, and Jose Limon schools and companies, as well as many others. Armes has toured his work extensively, in the Far East, Europe and North America. He is currently resident at Manhattan’s The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, creating sound to accompany Movement for Actors teachers and students.
Armes uses an exciting variety of electronics, percussion, keyboards, voice and guitar to forge his signature sound in class and stage work. His teaching workshops incorporate elements of choreography, musicology and acoustic theory in order to create a stimulating and original sonic education for the young dancer.
He has also created two CDs of music specifically for use in the Contemporary Dance class. More on Armes at his website.
