I tidied up the Tascam Hard Drive today, clearing off space for experimentation and note taking towards my next writing and recording project.

Envisaging a different, and somewhat communally oriented modus operandi this time, I contacted some players:

A recording project for early next year… rough plan is I know a good live room where I can get access…. might have to be night sessions not sure yet… anyway, wanna try and lock – out (although I may have to accept breaking down and putting stuff away between sessions) three days or so and take all my recording gear, plus some musicians (including you) to lay down basic tracks — some written songs, some jams— live, that I will then take away and play with back here. On the live date I’ll play keys/electronic percussion or bass or guide guitar — you get the picture, whatever is missing…. vocals too….

I will endeavour to have amps (although all the guitarists I know have better ones than I), a Fractal (guitar processing/effects), and a drum-kit on site, plus my keyboards, electric percussion (wavedrum/handsonic), djembe/talking drum percussion etc, acoustic guitars etc.

Ok, drums are still an issue, I got two guys who play Broadway a lot who often say “Hey man we should play!”—- so these guys are ‘maybes’ — which could work if I had a sometimes chaotic revolving door of players, i.e. if I had bass and drums in the room I could drop everything else and record them, other times do acoustic work (I want the room sound) or work to a click track/loop from the Triton.

Will need more mics definitely. Some screens/baffles would be nice. I’m not super concerned about bleed, especially if I am using my 57s, and ambient noise, I intend to make integral to the sound.

Right now I can record eight inputs simultaneously, my preamps are not great but will do. I will need some help loading in/out, and engineering.

Anyway I’m thinking sprawling from hardish rock versions of songs, maybe older ones from Red and Green to ambient dub rhythms that get well processed, a lot of variety. Think Electric Ladyland, Screamadellica, Sign of the Times, Rising above Bedlam, an Orb recording, Low/Heroes you get the gist. So some stuff will need rehearsal, some won’t — it can be written in the room.

I’m emailing you guys because you’ve all been integral to my music making over the last few years — all offers of support, whether playing, gear loans, suggesting players or idealogical gratefully received:-) I’m hoping to have a exciting, productive and very musical 72 hours or so of work with all of you if possible!

Or indeed, maybe I will play nothing at all on these sessions, and just listen to the others…
