A couple of months ago, I had a dream, I forget the content, but I understood from it that I needed to get my old notebooks out and look for the muse there. This I did, but nothing came of it for a while, so I did other projects.

Connected to this is that earlier in the year I was lent on a very long term basis a special electric guitar (Gibson L5s). At first I barely touched it, as I was wrapped up in piano playing (I also bought a new piano) but eventually I started working on it, and found it perfect for re-visiting a certain funky jazzy thing that I was very into at one time, and that it also evoked old riffs, half finished sequences and songs, especially from Berlin days.

Which brought me back to the notebooks. “Sweet Breakfast”, was a forgotten fragment of delay drenched guitar that when I played it again caused a rush of memories, amongst them my first entrance ever into the then walled city of West Berlin, and also the balcony apartment I ended up living in on Kant Strasse. Another tune “She Isn’t Here” was concocted there, and in fact served as part of a soundscape for a gallery show by an expressionist painter I have long since lost contact with. “Northern Town”, more a memory of leaving Holland on that first journey east had some life, as I played an earlier version often enough at CBGBs, the Bitter End etc when I first arrived in NYC, before re-entering the confines of the notebook again.

So the books are out, I’ve somehow found enough motivation to sing again, and perhaps a project meaningful enough to me to constitute my first vocal driven full release of ‘new,’ writing (very much based in past musing) since Noor.
