Sea Lanes
Geoffrey Armes
Traditional sorta
Not so long ago
when the sea-lanes we'd roam
so many miles out
from the lands we call home
tied up in a western harbour
by a leeward island's shore
that's when I first heard
that sweet lady call
We wandered in the back-streets
of an unnamed shanty town
each with a young girl
his arms wrapped around
each one a lover
or a mother in her way
we'd lose to the billowed breeze
all thought of the next day
I came upon a wooden house
just behind a dune
lit from the seaward side
by the light of the moon
she stood there in the doorway
her hair wild and loose
with the mien of a lady
who I'd soon seduce
In a resonant voice
she called out my name
cried enter herein
if there's something you'd gain
so I lay there in the night through
in some other world
open to the dark sky
while the surf gently swirled
