Just got back from a gig of a different type... listening to carolling office workers in a building lobby. Well demonstrative of the transformative power of music this one, as a normally drear hallway loaded with security guards and the usual cornucopia of human frailties became vibrant with sonic warmth and beauty. Looking at this choir, and picturing them as individuals perhaps politicking for promotion or grumbling down the phone or indeed stoically going about life’s quotidian niceties, and then shifting internally, and seeing them as a cooperative and harmonious one body of beautiful music, was instructive. Music at its best pervaded them, and the audience. Devoid of all the attitudes of singer-songwriters, professional players et al, and any agenda other than just to get classic notes ’right’ (in a choir ego is definitely subsumed), this was a ’pure’ moment, in its own way as valid as any Sufi master, or the work of JS Bach.
