From the first note it’s clear that this is a good sounding recording. Acoustic guitarist and singer Silverberg brought a solid rhythm section (Cliff Hackford, Steve Blatt) into a studio manned by a guy who knows how to swing a microphone and twiddle eq (Mike Nugent). He didn’t hide his sixties and seventies soft-rock roots and instead set about documenting that experience for the rest of us via a set of classic feeling songs. More than once during my first listen I had to check back: ‘is this a cover?’ and each time the sleeve corrected me: this is a set of Silverberg originals. Another plus, unlike some other locally produced releases; a very nice digipack cover with full credits and liner notes, and Dee Loebel’s evocative photography. As well as the core band there are back-up vocalists, a Hammond organ, and the plangent steel guitar of Russ Rogers, all tastefully played. Overall, a chirpy disc, but it fades with the sad beauty of ‘Two Glasses’, perhaps the most moving song of the collection. Available via www.rogersilverberg.com
